Against the Georgian Language <\/span><\/h2>

Oppression of Georgian Culture in Occupied Abkhazia<\/strong><\/p>

Thirty years have passed since the Georgian\u2013Abkhazian conflict froze. In this time there have been small hope-giving moments, for example the fact that up to 50 Georgian-language schools were functioning in the Gali region. After the war, approximately 45,000 ethnic Georgians returned home and live there to this day. But for now the picture has changed radically, and teaching in the Georgian language in Georgian schools has been cancelled and the entire educational process has been transferred to the Russian language.<\/span><\/p>

Seventeen-year-old Natia K., who studies in one of the schools in the low-lying area of Gali, is taught Georgian as a foreign language only two hours a week.<\/span><\/p>

When I called Natia and heard her tearfully telling me about the problem, it was very difficult for me to listen. It turns out that ethnic Georgians living in their own territory learn Georgian as a foreign language.<\/span><\/p>

According to the decision of the de facto Ministry of Education of occupied Abkhazia, the teaching of Georgian in the schools of Gali district was banned for all grades.<\/span><\/p>

The Abkhazian side made this decision in 2015, and the process has been going on step by step to this day. After the war in 1992\u201393, the reduction in the number of Georgian-language schools started in 1994.<\/span><\/p>

According to the 2020 data of the Abkhazian side, about 225,000 people live in the territory of Abkhazia. Of these, 47,000 are ethnic Georgians, and most of them, about 45,000, live in Gali region; 41,000 are Armenians, up to 3,000 Russians and 89,000 Abkhazians.<\/span><\/p>

For comparison, currently no Georgian-language school is functioning in occupied Abkhazia. According to the information obtained by us, teaching is provided in Abkhaz language in 50 schools, in Abkhazian-Russian in 45 schools and in Armenian in 25 schools.<\/span><\/p>

30 Jahre sind verstrichen, nachdem der georgisch-abchasische Konflikt eingefroren worden war. Es gab kleine, positive Momente, beispielsweise die Tatsache, dass in der Region Gali bis zu 50 georgischsprachige Schulen in Betrieb waren.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Nach dem Krieg kehrten etwa 45.000 ethnische Georgier auf eigenen Willen zur\u00fcck. Sie leben noch heute, aber heute hat sich die Situation radikal ver\u00e4ndert. Der Unterricht in georgischsprachigen Schulen wurde eingestellt und der gesamte Unterricht findet seitdem in russischer Sprache statt.<\/span><\/p>

Die 17-j\u00e4hrige Natia K. besucht die Schule im Tiefland des Gali-Gebiets, lernt Georgisch als Fremdsprache, allerdings nur zwei Stunden die Woche. Als ich Natia telefonisch kontaktierte und h\u00f6rte, wie sie mir unter Tr\u00e4nen von dem Problem erz\u00e4hlte. Es fiel es mir sehr schwer zu h\u00f6ren, ethnische Georgier Georgisch in ihrem eigenen Land als Fremdsprache lernen m\u00fcssen.<\/span><\/p>

Auf Beschluss des de-facto Bildungsministriums des besetzten Abchasiens war Georgischunterricht an den Schule des Bezirks Gali bis einschlie\u00dflich der 11. Klasse verboten. Die abchasische Seite hat diese Entscheidung im Jahr 2015 getroffen und dieser Prozess l\u00e4uft bis jetzt. Der Abbau der georgischsprachigen Schulen begann 1994, also nach dem Konflikt 1992-1993.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Nach Angaben der abchasischen Seite aus dem Jahr 2020 leben auf dem Territorium Abchasiens etwa 225.000 Menschen. Davon sind 47.000 ethnische Georgier, 45.000 von ihnen leben in der Region Gali, au\u00dferdem 41.000 Armenier, bis zu 3.000 Russen und 89.000 Abchasen.<\/span><\/p>

Zum Vergleich: Im besetzten Abchasien gibt es bis heute keine georgischsprachige Schule. Nach den von uns erhaltenen Informationen gibt es Unterricht in 50 Schulen in abchasischer Sprache, in 45 Schulen in abchasisch-russischer Sprache und in 25 Schulen in armenischer Sprache.<\/span><\/p><\/div>
